SAN FRANCISCO — Standing at his locker Sunday morning, Giants starter Alex Wood made a plea for empathy: “I don’t know if anyone has back issues,” he said.A low back strain forced Wood to the 15-day injured list, and he didn’t have to look far for someone understanding of his situation, joining Ross Stripling as a pair of Giants starters both dealing with back issues. Wood, however, remained optimistic that his strain was less severe than Stripling’s, who remains a way off from returning.“We didn’t want to push it for my next start,” Wood said. “I think it should just be the 15 days.”Wood said an MRI on his back came back clean and that “I already feel like I’m moving better today than the last few days.” The back began causing discomfort before his start in Milwaukee last week but became more serious following his start Wednesday, when he said his lower left side “just locked up a little bit.”...

DENVER (AP) — Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra practically snickered when asked about neutralizing the effective two-man game played by Denver Nuggets teammates Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray.“Yeah, where do you start? You have two guys that can score 50 in a playoff game. One guy is a triple-double machine that loves to get guys involved,” Spoelstra said.“You go down the list of myriad of things you can do defensively, you have to check off some things that you don’t really want to do because of both their ability to score and Jokic’s ability to create something off-script."Spoelstra knows what the Heat are up against; it's nothing new for Denver. The Nuggets' potent duo has been nearly unstoppable in powering Denver's 13-3 run through the playoffs, including a 104-93 win in Game 1. Heat looking to get to the line more, while Nuggets vow to be better in Game 2 A win Sunday night would make them just the second team this century to win its first 10 home games in a single postseason....

The orb reached peak illumination at 11:42 p.m. ET Saturday and will appear full for three days, according to NASA. ATLANTA (AP) — The voice of Martin Luther King Sr., a melodic tenor like his slain son, carried across Madison Square Garden, calming the raucous Democrats who had nominated his friend and fellow Georgian for the presidency. “Surely, the Lord sent Jimmy Carter to come on out and bring America back where she belongs,” the venerated Black pastor said as the nominee smiled behind him. “I’m with him. You are, too. Let me tell you, we must close ranks now.”Carter then shared a moment with Coretta Scott King, clasping hands and locking eyes with the widowed first lady of the Civil Rights Movement, their children looking on. For the Kings, closing the 1976 convention affirmed their continued reach — and their pragmatism — eight years after Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. For Carter, it marked the evolution of a white politician from the Old Confederacy: As a local leader and state senator who aspired for more, he had mostly avoided controversial stands during the civil rights era....
